Lucy doesn't have a character arc, because the mama bear instinct was not developed, it was always there. How about the engagement cheese? One scene where Lucy gets a hug from Margo and then it's Agnus who calls her mom at the end of the movie because why bother actually having anything tie in to anything else? The lack of world building made me sad, but I suppose if there is a fully formed anti villain league and the hero world is developed, where do you go from there? They could have shown Gru's father and who he was as a villain or they could have shown the history between Balthazar and Gru or even teased a little at Dru's history or SOMETHING.Īnd again with Illumination syndrome, nothing played into anything else? Do you think Lucky the Goat being adopted added anything to the proceedings? Did his one horn pop any bubblegum? Nope. I'm sure you could work Balthazar's disguise power into another scene if needed. I wonder if she is an agent for Balthazar or if her actions tie up the league from helping in the third act or- or- she appears outside of that scene at all? Like, why not just have Gru not recover the diamond and get fired.
The director of the Anti Villain League is fired and replaced by a new woman with a distinctive character design. Everything is just a justification to move the plot forward. The plot lacks a sense of cohesion and structure. So, this movie was fine enough but still suffers from an issue with Illumination features.
